The French tricolor flag dates from the French Revolution in 1789. It was adopted in 1794 as the emblem of the country. Blue and red represent the colors of the city of Paris. Also, the insurgents wore a blue and red cockade in reference to Paris. These two colors surround the white color, symbol of royalty. Louis-Philippe had added a Gallic rooster to the center of the flag. However, later it disappeared.
